“For the first time, Jack felt sorry for her. That Jack is such a troubled young man is quite frightening but that the author creates in him a figure who demands our goodwill and gets us wanting him to thrive is astonishing as he is a thief and vandal.

”The three abandoned children in the novel tugged at my heartstrings. In 2015 I read the novel “The Shut Eye” and quite fell in love with the curmudgeonly Detective Inspector Marvel.

This title will without doubt be included in my list of favourite reads of 2018. So Snap is all about a missing pregnant mother and a married woman terrified by a burglar who threatens her in a very personal way. There is no better writer in my mind than Belinda Bauer and there is therefore only one book to read just now.

Slovenly Marvel working with the fastidious Reynolds was a treat to read about. The reader could empathize with her whilst wishing she needed more of an emotional support system. It won't win the Booker, but it won my personal "best thriller of the year" award, hands down.
